President A. Ray Olpin President Ernest L. Wilkinson President's Welcome To BY. II. The University of Utah and its administration takes genuine pride in playing host this year to the always-colorful football duel between the University and its nearest Skyline neighbor, Brigham Young University. We are pleased that this traditional event attracts such a large crowd of enthusiastic supporters of the competing teams. It reflects not only the keen rivalry but also the deep pride which Utahns feel toward two fine universities. We welcome our opponents from the "Y" and extend to their student body and president, Dr. Ernest L. Wilkinson, our best wishes for a satisfying season. PRESIDENT DAVID O. McKAY A most distinguished alumnus, graduated from the University in 1898. Now a distinguished leader in religion in America, President David O. McKay of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, distinguished himself sixty-three years ago in another field - football. President McKay, a University of Utah graduate, who has seen every one of his sons and daughters graduate from the U., played right guard for the Redskin eleven of 1894. The University's first officially sponsored football team took the field in 1894. In contrast to today's "smorgasbord offense," the football played by the original Utes featured only two plays: a center buck and end run. The line averaged 158 and the backfield 163. DAVID O. McKAY Grid Star-1894 A right guard on the stalwart University of Utah team of 1894, David O. McKay is shown here with his gridiron teammates (second from the left in the top row). In 1894 David O. McKay and his teammates played in makeshift uniforms and used only one football for the entire season (it had to be patched in two places before the last game could be played). The players had no helmets so they wore their hair long and parted in the middle for some "protection." The 1894 books show the University of Utah with one "win" and two "losses": the Utes were defeated by Salt Lake High School, lost to the Y. M. C. A. 14-0, and then took revenge on the Salt Lake High School 14-6 in the season's final game. In one of these contests, David O. McKay played for a half game with a badly sprained ankle, typifying the rugged quality of the "no time-outs" era of Utah football. The first game drew 1,500 fans. 245 South 1st West - EL 9-7733 • STADIUM INFORMATION REST ROOMS-On ground floor at south lobbies of either stand and in Field House. Karl Jensen, with hard running and good defensive work, was chosen as the "Back of the Week," and Jack Seul, for his fine defensive work at end, was picked as the "Lineman of the Week." h These two men sparked the Utes in their numerous drives into Vandal territory and were called by press box observers the best the Redskins had to offer. 1 6 4 - 1 6 6 regent street, 38 The House which is equipped to supply you the very finest in Letterpress printing plates. It forms the backbone of Utah's steel industry, largest among the western states. Where might a Utah business community obtain a count of shopper traffic at its busiest intersection? Where could a banker obtain current information on the volume of new construction in Utah? Both can get answers form the same source: the University of Utah Bureau of Economic and Business Research. The Bureau might be described as a living almanac of Utah. Its staff is busy 365 days of the year collecting and analyzing information about the state. Its interests are as numerous as the interests of the Utah people; they range, as accompanying charts show, from iron and steel production to football attendance. Its services are available to local businessmen, state and local agencies in government, newspapers and other Utah publications, as well as the students and faculty of the University. A popular service the Bureau performs is the monthly publication of the Utah Economic and Business Review, a monthly survey of the current Utah economy. Recent studies published by the Bureau cover spending on fishing and hunting in Utah, the enrollment outlook for Utah schools, and an analysis of the cost of collecting taxes in Utah.
