DR. A. RAY OLPIN President, University of Utah DR. CARL McFARLAND President, University of Montana PRESIDENTS WELCOME Montana University has had only one alumnus in history return to preside over the school. He is Dr. Carl McFarland. The younger set on campus knows him as "cool Carl" because of a year around ice-skating arena built under his administration. He's a former assistant attorney general of the United States and one of the nation's best known legal minds, having won the first Ross Award given by the American Bar Association. Hosting Pres. McFarland for the Utes' home opener this year will be Dr. A. Ray Olpin, genial president of the University of Utah. President Olpin's legal experience runs to paying an occasional ticket for overparking in front of the Governor's Mansion, but he's spent 10 years making the U one of the finest institutions in the nation. He's not a U alumnus, having gone to college in Provo at a school the name of which eludes us at the moment. One thing both presidents have in common is the love of a good football game. Utah has won five previous encounters against the Sil-vertips in a series dating back to 1904. The 1954 game, which Utah won 41-20, is the only one both gentlemen had a real stake in. The University of Utah welcomes Montana U's fine ball club, its many fans, and its respected president in this renewal of football rivalry between the two schools. 245 South 1st West • EL 9-7733 For t h a t casual " C A M P U S LOOK FOR THE WELL DRESSED MAN SUITS - Tailored by Schloss - $55 and up Virgin Wool JACK FROST FOOTBALL ROBE IN A BAG /gfiafiy^ - SCHOOL SWEATERS A SPECIALTY - > » $7.95 &S 28 RICHARDS STREET mJtah Woolen Mills A Blod< Sou,h"Temple Squore UTAH'S BIGGEST SELECTION OF BUILDING MATERIALS Complete Building, Remodeling or Repair Service . . . including low-cost financing . . . available in "ONE-STOP" 1 154 East 21st South Salt Lake City INgersoll • 6-8601 LUMBER: Pine, dimension, flooring, hardwoods. "Shagg" Burbidge was asked for permission to use his name as a former Ute football great, he said this, "First and foremost, let it be understood that I was never a football great, but shall always be grateful for the privilege of participation." This quote exemplifies the character of Dr. Burbidge, who has proved to be one of the finest rooters, supporters, and performers that the University of Utah has ever had. "Shagg" Burbidge came to the University of Utah from the old L.D.S. High School where he was prominent in school and athletic activities. Coach at L.D.S. at that time was the Utes' Vadal Peterson who was assisted by the late Homer "Pug" Warner. "Shagg" was a four letter man in high school, and upon graduation received the Heber J. Grant award for excellence in athletics and scholarship. He entered the University of Utah in 1923 and was Freshman Class President. After his frosh year he left for New Zealand to spend the next four years as a missionary for the L.D.S. Church. Upon returning to the "U", he played two years of football, at center and-guard, under Ike Armstrong, as well as being a member of SKI EQUIPMENT and SKI WEAR "There is No Substitute for Quality" Outfitters for SCHOOL AND TEAM ATHLETIC EQUIPMENT "BUY FROM THE MEN WHO KNOW WHAT YOU NEED FOR THE BEST RESULTS" Steven^ & ^n&um SPORTING GOODS COMPANY 1121 East 21st South - Telephone HU 4-8131 Get Yours With Courtesy at the CONVENIENT SUGAR HOUSE LOCATION 245 South 1st West • EL 9-7733 THIS SEASON FOLLOW THE "UTES' WITH A FINE CAMERA ROLLIE LEICA KODAK-ANSCO BELL 1 HOWELL NIKON-ARGUS PHOTOCRAPHY PHONE EL 9-DB91 25 E. Such a task, for instance, as trying to write a "tribute to Amos Alonzo Stagg." As a theological student, as a great undergraduate pitcher and football player at Yale, as a football coach at Chicago for forty years and elsewhere for twenty more, as a life member of the Football Rules Committee since its origin, as a devoted husband for more than 60 years to an equally devoted wife, as the head of a gracious family, and as a loyal friend he has accomplished in his one lifetime the goals for which all of us strive. As long as we can remember, Amos Alonzo Stagg has been an inspiration not only to athletics, but to the entire American way of life. All of us - writers, coaches, players, officials and fans - join in paying him this homage. Printed by Paragon Press, Inc. FORREST D. Football's Hall of Fame The National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame, composed largely of former football players, was organized in 1947 to honor those men, who as players and coaches, have made amateur football the game of American youth. Since then, its aims have been expanded to include offering those directly responsible for the conduct and administration of the game assistance to help preserve intercollegiate football in its rightful position as a beneficial and necessary function of our educational system. The Foundation feels strongly that there is a demand that these aims continue to be realized. It is engaged in a program designed to answer that demand and looks to those who share its determination for support. This support comes largely from its members, organized in chapters stretching from coast-to-coast, whose dues range from five d o l l a r s annually. Through these chapters, the Foundation unites, in one group, the varied forces responsible for the conduct of the game with the man who has played it and made it what it is today. For him, the ex-football player, the National Football Foundation It's Skill That Counts! Whether it's catching a pass or cooking a meal, it's skill that scores. Temple Square Hotel is famous for its skill in preparing food and serving it. HOTEL Temple Square COFFEE SHOP AND TEMPLE VIEW DINING ROOM and Hall of Fame is particularly an opportunity for expression, perhaps for the first time in a na-tional way. Chapters are organized with the help of the national organization and elect their own officers. In addition to their activities locally, they elect state officers, who in turn, attend the Foundation's annual Football Congress, during which players and coaches are elected to the Football Hall of Fame. Nominations are submitted by Foundation members. There is selective voting by the press, and final selections by a national Honors Court. To date, out of the thousands who have participated in the game, 99 players and 45 coaches, representing 52 colleges and universities, have been so elected. In many cases, they have been honored at Hall of Fame game ceremonies conducted on the very fields of their success in view of thousands of spectators. This Fall, approximately 11 such games have already been scheduled to honor recent nominees. Those wishing to help further these aims by joining the Foundation may do so by contacting The Executive Secretary, National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame, New Brunswick, New Jersey. ABOUT THE U 11 It's not that they really needed men's housing at the U; practically everybody likes to have snow blow in through holes in the wall, and there's really nothing quite like a naked light bulb to stand by. But the U now has some of the finest collegiate housing in the nation. Sure, it needs more, but they don't build better than Ballif Hall, dedicated in May to the memory of John L. Ballif Jr., beloved long-time Dean of Men. In this $1,115,000 building, each of six wings houses 52 men who are served by a spacious dining hall, administratve office and a central lounge. The arrangement is unique in that eight men live in units comprised of four double rooms with a central living room and lavatory facilities. Sounds expensive, doesn't it? Actually, cost per occupant was about $3200, well below the national average for college dorm construction which doesn't do the job nearly as well. The U is proud of Ballif Hall. It serves well during the regular school year as a men's dorm and is available during the summer to participants in campus workshops, special projects and others who find its facilities delightful, convenient and inexpensive.
