A native of Kaysville, where he lettered in football, basketball and track at Davis high school, Swan was active in student affairs on the Hilltop campus. He made Owl and Key and Skull and Bones and was a member of Sigma Chi. Upon graduation, Swan married the former Dorothy Paine, a Pi Phi from the class of '37. At one time Swan was the youngest mayor in the United States, a distinction gained when elected mayor of Kaysville shortly after graduation from college. He was 25 at the time. The Buffs show heavy losses from last year's Orange Bowl champions as six of the seven starting forwards graduated. Returning backfield strength is good, with three of the four starters back plus all four men from the number two unit. Ward has major overhaul jobs to do at both ends and center where graduation losses were heaviest. If he can patch those positions adequately the Buffs could near their 1956 form. Offensively, the running attack looks to be much more effective than the aerial game just as it was a year ago. Fullback John "Beast" Bayuk is gone but Halfbacks Bob Stransky, Howard Cook and Eddie Dove and Fullback Leroy Clark should keep the running game humming. Ringleader of the Buff offense again will be Boyd Dowler, who had a brilliant sophomore season at quarterback a year ago. Up front, Guard John Wooten and Tackle Bob Salerno head an adequate-appearing crew of guards and tackles. But no outstanding newcomers appeared at ends and center during spring drills. The Buffs will use a multiple offense, with the single wing as the bread and butter attack. They'll also run T and Winged T plays from behind a split, unbalanced line. The Buffaloes return 19 of 36 lettermen in this way: four from the first unit, eight from the second unit, four from the third unit, and three from beyond the three-deep lineup. Three player switches were made during spring drills as Ward attempted to bloster his weak spots. Fullback Mel Warner went to center. Halfback Gene Worden to fullback and Halfback Bob Munson to left end. , A*""A hare fun' IT'S Cheaper More Convenient WHEN YOUR GROUP TRAVELS CHARTER A BUS JCMU/gbOO. The University of Utah is proud to have represented on its campus the Reserve Officers' Training Corps programs from all three of the armed services. Each program has led to commissions for hundreds of former Utah students. While the requirements of each differ, qualified students are sought after and encouraged to enroll. The Navy offers two programs, regular and contract, with each offering financial aid to the students. The normal college curriculum is followed by the Midshipment, who are required to complete one course per quarter in Naval Science. Prior application to determine qualifications for the program is required by the Navy. For registration in the Army ROTC no prior application is required. Students may sign up at registration. As in the Navy the Army students pursue a course of study, with certain courses required in General Military Science. The Air Force offers a basic and advanced course, with the first covering the freshman and sophomore years and the latter the junior and senior. Those students who complete the basic course satisfactorily are enrolled in the advanced course upon request. Further information may be obtained from the various units on campus: Army ROTC - Military Science Building, Col. H. C. Plapp; Navy ROTC - Naval Science Building, Capt. D. H. SOUTHERNER GOES WEST JACK CURTICE University of Utah Athletic Director and Head Football Coach University of Utah's head coach, Jack Curtice, is a Southerner who has taken over the West. For the first time in the history of intercollegiate football a full-fledged Kentucky Colonel will lead the West squad in the annual East-West Shrine all-star game - Curtice is the man. The Redskin mentor has long been respected in the Rockies for his astute football knowledge and in the past few years he has come into national prominence as a keen grid teacher. Last year he was a member of the coaching staff of the victorious West squad in the Shrine game and now in '57 the big job is his. This is the first time a Mountain States Conference coach has been chosen for this honor. In addition, Curtice is a member of the national football rules committee and is a trustee of the American Football Coaches Association. While at Utah, Curtice has established a record that is tops for any active coach in the Skyline. Since he came in 1950 his teams have won 28 league games, lost 8, and tied 2. They have copped three league titles, and have never been lower than fourth during Cactus Jack's regime. Curtice was born in Glasgow, Kentucky, and attended high school in Louisville, where he tailbacked the Louisville Male High School to the mythical national high school title. He went on to become an all-conference selection in both football and basketball at Transylvania. He also lettered in baseball and track. He graduated in 1930. The Redskin "Head-Man" began his coaching career at West Texas State in 1938 and moved into the head coaching job at this school two years later. There he won two conference titles. After a stint in the Navy he returned to coach Texas Western in the Border Conference. He came to Utah in 1950. 245 South 1st West . EL 9-7733 • 29 LAYERS UTE PLAYERS Step out ahead and . . . UTE PLAYERS ABOUT THE y\ U u These children show the delight of an experience which most children take for granted - communication by sound. The U Speech and Hearing Center is helping them overcome hearing losses in their preschool years, so they can go on to the public schools when they turn school age. The University of Utah, where many Utahns complete their formal education, also gives a few young Utahns their start in formal education. As young as 2Vz years of age, children with hearing handicaps enroll in the Speech and Hearing Center - the only clinic of its kind in the Intermountain West. These children, shut into seemingly impenetrable isolation by loss of hearing, present special problems to their parents, teachers and friends. Unless they receive early help, their problems and those of their parents multiply as they grow. The U gives them this help - through special techniques, applied by specially trained teachers. But why a school of this kind in the state University? Dr. Wallace A. Goates, director of the clinic, has two answers. First, it gives the University students studying speech and hearing rehabilitation invaluable clinical experience. The clinical experience, Dr. Goates said, is essential to the preparation of these students for careers in speech therapy. Second, it saves the taxpayers the expense later of putting many of these children in the State School for the Deaf. The children who are hard of hearing and not totally deaf often can, after the clinical training, join their playmates in the public schools when they turn school age. Without the training, the same students likely would be unable to attend public schools. The cost of putting the children through the State School for the Deaf is about ten times as high, per student, as the cost of educating them in public schools. 40 • Printed by Paragon Press, Inc.
