HUMPHREYS President Wyoming University Always A Home It's a pleasant thing to come home to the campus at this time of the year, but in a larger sense none of us actually ever leaves the University of Utah. The months and years we spent here - a long time ago now for some of us - did so much to shape our lives, our thoughts, our characters, that we couldn't get far from the U even if we wanted to. All this is to say that Homecoming does us good. It's more than a football game, a dance, and some lovely campus royalty. It's a chance to meet our friends - and ourselves - coming and going. We'll all get a chance to meet some fine persons, too, including Dr. George Duke Humphreys, president of the University of Wyoming, and Dr. A. Ray Olpin, president of the University of Utah. Both are loyal backers of their respective teams; both rank high among the educators of the nation. I always find Homecoming a lot of fun and hope that each of you enjoys yourself as much as I intend to. ' DR. ADAM S. Ballif Hall, new men's dormitory at the U which will house 300 men in family-living groups. It is adjacent to the new University Community Center and the Book Store. If you ever spent as much as a day on campus at the U prior to March 15, 1954, you'll remember John L. Ballif, Dean of Men, untiring greeter of teams victorious or teams defeated, usher-in-chief at anything collegiate, guardian of morals and morale, and just plain peach of a guy. Dean Ballif long wanted a men's dormitory of which the U could be proud. He didn't live to see his dream realized, but somehow you just know that, from his special Valhalla, Dean Ballif - with that memorable twinkle in his eye - is looking down with pleasure at one of the finest new structures on campus. This long-needed building is soon to be dedicated formally to the memory and to the dream of John L. Ballif. It goes without saying that the Dean, who never missed an event like this, will be there. John Lyman Ballif III, left, shows a paint-color sample to his mother, Mrs. John L. Ballif, right, as his wife, Barbara Neilson Ballif, and his sister, Mrs. Grant W. Back: Michael. H 0 M E i When Utah and Wyoming meet today there will be at least one Wyoming resident who will be pulling hard for a Redskin victory. That man will be Walt McDonald, a former Ute football great. Walt was born at Worland, Wyoming, but after high school attended the University of Utah from 1929 to 1933. During this time he performed at center for Utah and made a record as one of the Redskins' all-time great snapper-backs. The big Ute lineman made such a name for himself in collegiate football that upon graduation he played professional football for three fine teams: St. Louis in 1934, Brooklyn in 1935, and Los Angeles in 19*36. After his stint in the pro game Walt bought a garage in Riverton, Wyoming, in May of 1937, and in 1938 became a consignee for The Texas Company at Riverton. He was just as successful in business as he had been on the football field and now is sole owner of one of the largest automobile repair shops in Wyoming. Walt is the proud father of two fine sons - Michael, age 17, a prospective Redskin footballer, and Steve, age 6, who also hopes to follow in his dad's footsteps. Mrs. McDonald is the former Winifred Hummel of New Ulm, Minnesota. Walt, like all other Redskin alumni, is looking for a victory today. 34 UTAH'S BIGGEST SELECTION OF .
