DETAILED ITINERARY AND GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT TOUR AND HAWAII AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST Parsons Pave Stadium Lots The parking lots around Romney Stadium are now paved, thanks in large measure to a major contribution by Jack B. and Bonnie Parson of Logan. Nearly 1500 spaces are now available for persons attending athletic events. Four areas are completed- a terraced parking lot south of the stadium between ninth and tenth north, the C-note areassouth of the stadium, an area on the west side of the stadium and an area north of the team facilities building. USU's Director of Athletics, Frank "Bus" Williams, said that with the completion of the parking lots, the ease and comfort of the patrons of the games is greatly facilitated. "Thanks to the Parsons, there will be no more mud and slipping on stones and weeds as people try to get from their cars to the Stadium or the Spectrum," Williams stated. Besides helping many young students through USU by giving them employment, the Parsons for the past twenty years have provided needed financial support for USU athletics. One of their donations is the Outstanding Senior Athletic Award given every year through each of the local high schools-Logan and Sky View (formerly North Cache and South Cache High Schools). The Parsons have four children. Jack, Jr., a graduate of Utah State, who with his wife, the former DeAnn Wilson, resides with their four children in Brigham City; Ned, a USU graduate, married to the former Marilyn Mann, who with his wife and two children live in Ogden; Kathryn, a former USU student, wife of Dr. John Lee, who with her husband and two children live in Scottsdale, Arizona; and Michael, who isa freshman at Utah State. Mr. Parson started his construction company in 1952. The home office was in Smithfield, Utah, and during the ensuing twenty years, the company has grown to where it now has offices in Ogden (the main office), Brigham City, Tremonton, Smithfield and Salt Lake City, with operations in Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado and Nevada. The company is today engaged in construction (heavy), ready-mixed concrete, black-top paving and demolitions and site work for industrial buildings. Mr. Parson is past State president of Associated General Contractors of America and is presently serving as a national director of the organization. His civic duties include, past State president of Utah State Elks Association and past Exalted Ruler of Logan Lodge No. 1453, past president of Logan Golf and Country Club, member of Rotary International, member of Cache Chamber of Commerce and Elder in the L.D.S. Church. "Utah State University is very grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Parson for their generous gift which has made the new parking lots possible," President Glen L. Taggart states. "It is another example of the excellent support which the Parson family has long provided to USU athletics." Distinguished USU Graduates Five Distinguished Service Award recipients who were selected by a joint committee of USU faculty and members of the Institutional Council are with us today for half-time activities. LEX BAER Ph. 752-3089 HEAD COACH CHUCK MILLS Football has been good to Chuck Mills. And Mills' leadership, so the record indicates, has been good to Utah State football. Last year, possibly his best at USU, Chuck's Aggies won the state collegiate title, went 3-1 against WAC teams, a nd beat two conference champions. Now anticipating hissixth year at USU, Mills has compiled an impressive 34-21-1 record in five seasons. Since becoming the school's 14th head coach Feb. 9, 1967, Chuck has conducted his Aggie coaching career using the "Spirit Most Dominate Technique" motto as his guiding precept. USU's football Aggies have enjoyed some spirited moments and outstanding victories during Mills' tenure. In fact, Mills and his staff performed something of a miracle during his first season at Utah State by directing a squad, regarded as less than a contender, to a 7-2-1 record. The two losses were by scores of 9-10 and 14- 17. During his first two season Mills' teams compiled a 14-5-1 record which stands alone in State coaching history for a coach's first two seasons. Last year's 8-3 record (10-3, considering two NCAA-sanctioned university level games in Japan) was one of the most rewarding seasons in the annals of USU football. Mills' 11-year head coaching record, on the college and university levels, stands at 64-38-3. That's a fine .627 winning percentage, exclusive off ties. A popular clinic speaker in the U.S., Chuck has conducted football workshops in Japan and Guam. He was recently appointed by Paul "Bear" Bryant of Alabama to a four-year term on the Ethics Committee of the American Football Coaches Association. Chuck also serves as Editor of the AFCA's summer publications. In addition, he is on the UPI rating board this year. Chuck Mills came to Utah State from an assistant coaching position with the Kansas City Chiefs, who played in the first Super Bowl the year he was with them (1966). A 1950 graduate of Illinois State University, Mills has one of the most diverse coaching backgrounds in the game today. He's had experience on the high school, junior college university, semi-pro and professional levels. Following graduation he coached for five years in the Chicago Public Schools, served in the U.S. Marine Corps and coached a semi-pro team in Chicago to a three-year 30-0-3 record. He later became a line coach at Citrus JC (1956) and from 1957-61 was head coach of football and wrestling at Pomona College in Claremont, Calif. He later was assistant dean of men and head football coach at Indiana State University of Pennsylvania (1962-63) where his teams were 14-3-2. In 1964 Mills became head coach at the U. S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, Long Island, N. Y. In 1965 he took an assistant position at the University of Arizona and the next year coached with the Chiefs. In the past five seasons at USU Mills has had 24 players go into the professional ranks. Chuck and his wife, Barbara, have no children. Sigma Chi Fraternity began the tradition in 1947 and the "A" has shown brightly on the Logan mountainside at least twice a year ever since. Originally, the discussion was to build a giant block "A" in white rocks or concrete similar to the alphabet which dots mountains and hills throughout Utah. Fortunately, some forward-looking administrators and student council representatives felt a permanent "A" would detract from the beauty of Cache Valley and they opted for one which would be visible only when lit. Sigma Chi Fraternity volunteered to build and light the "A" and it was surveyed and layed out by several Sigs in engineering. The "A" is lit just as it was in 1947, with burlap wicks placed in one-gallon cans of oil where they burn for several hours. At a university which is nearly 100 years old, a 25-year tradition may seem young, but to generations of Aggies and Aggie supporters, the lighted "A" upon the hill is a tradition almost as strong as the rivalry between USU and the University of Utah. LIGHTING THE "A" Student Activity Board (STAB) Presents Nov. 13-17 Fall Quarter Games Tournament Featuring School Championships in: • Men's Bowling • Women's Bowling • Table Tennis (Ping Pong) • Pocket Billiards (Pool) • Chess • Bridge • Football (Table Game) Sign up in Game Room, bottom level of UC Nov. 18. In an attempt to feature those seven colleges, only three responded to requestsfor information, San Diego Mesa, San Joaquin Delta and Rio Hondo College.) Rio Hondo College of Whittier, Calif., has schooled several football players who have become successful major college football players. Utah State University was selected by current Aggies Wayne Crawford and Dennis Tarango. Tom Kelso, who played for USU in 1970 and 1971, also came from Rio Hondo. Tarango received all-America JC honors at Rio. He was a leading rusher for the Roadrunners and had a game high of 264 yards in 32 carries. Crawford also received post season honors. Another Rio player, Keith Wortman, was successful in playing on the two national championship teams at Nebraska in 1970 and 1971. He is now playing guard for the Green Bay Packers. Former USU backfield coach Al Prukop is coaching the Rio backs. RIO The Rio Hondo Community College District was created by the voters of the area in an election held Oct. 21, 1960. In February of 1963 the Board of Trustees voted to establish a late afternoon and evening division college program on the campuses of Sierra and El Rancho High Schools. In July of 1964, the District moved its headquarters from what was formerly Murphy Memorial Hospital to the Little Lake Elementary School campus in Santa Fe Springs. Meanwhile, ground was broken on the site of the current 120-acre, $15 million campus at 3600 Workman Mill Road on Feb. 4, 1965. Rio Hondo's first day studentbody started with about 550 students. More than 3,000 day students enrolled in the fall of 1966 when the new campus opened and the predicted fall enrollment for 1971 was set at 5,500 full-time day students. Located on rolling hills, the current campus includes split-level buildings, air-conditioned classrooms, and a panoramic view of the Los Angeles basin. The campus was greatly saddened at the untimely death of the first President, Dr. Phil H. Putnam, on Oct. 13, 1966, less than a month after the new campus was opened. Dr. Walter M. Utah State University athletic teams receive additional support each year from an active and interested group of Aggie boosters under the title, USU Athletic Associates. Chapter organizations are active in Brigham City (Lynn Peterson, president), Tremonton (Mel Foxley, president), Ogden (Howard Nielsen, president), Salt Lake City (Jack Christensen, president), Southern California (Jerry Wilson, president) Cache Valley (Gary Jones, president), and Idaho Falls (Gus and Donna Bergener, president). Associates officers for 1972-73 are Rod Jensen, president, Larry Anderson, treasurer and Norvel "Nog" Hansen, secretary. Contributions are made in four designations: C-Note membership ($100.00 or more), Associate member ($50.00), Quarterback, Mr. & Mrs. membership ($25.00) and Quarterback membership ($15.00). Membership in the Athletic Associates aids the development of major college level football and basketball teams. Contributors in return have ticket discounts, seat selection and parking privileges depending on the type of membership. All Associates members have a closer relationship with the Aggie teams and coaches. "C" NOTE DONORS Wm. "Bill" Peterson Lloyd T. Larson Joyner Lofthouse Norman B. Jones Fred W. Allen Lynn A. Logan, Utah 84321 (Ph. 752-3413) THE GREAT FOOTBALL GAME HAS BEEN PLAYED FOOTBALL AT USU, 1891-1901 By A. J. Simmonds University Archivist In September 1972 football, the oldest form of athletics on the USU campus, began its eighty-first year at Utah State University. As with many other great traditions a t the school, today's football program - both intramural and intercollegiate - grew from inauspicious beginnings. When the Agricultural College of Uta'h opened for its second year in the fall of 1891, a few students and several members of the faculty organized some intramural scrimmages on the rocky wasteland which later became the Quad. Some professors, trained at eastern colleges or at the University of Utah where the game was played haphazardly, had seen the game played (a few may have even played before). With that sort of local expertise and a couple of well-thumbed books of rules, football was launched in Logan. The rule books were really the keys to action in those first years of play. If a maneuver wasn't prohibited in the rules, the team used it. The lack of organization was matched by the lack of interest shown by town and gown alike. None of President Sanborn's letters mentions athletics, and the two Logan newspapers, the Journal and the Nation ignored it. New Attitude The next year, 1892, saw a change in both President and press. The President's son, Harry Sanborn, was elected team captain. The attitude of the Journal changed when, after a couple of months of practice scrimmages, the Aggies invited the University of Utah team to Logan for a game on Thanksgiving Day. The Journal gave an advance notice on November 15: "Students from the University of Utah are coming to Logan on Thanksgiving day to engage in a football match with the A.C. eleven. The game will come off on the A.C. grounds at 3:30 p.m." The notice could have been penned by anyone on the Journal staff, but the article covering U.S.U.'s first intercollegiate game
