The two Level II violations are related to the recruitment of prospective student-athletes and a Level III violation involved the son of the head coach. The coaches and institution identified and self-reported the off-campus recruiting infractions, then collaborated with the NCAA to finalize the investigation into the on-campus visit. Utah’s self-imposed penalties include: a $5,000 financial penalty; off-campus recruiting ban from July 11-15, 2018; reduction of in-person recruiting days from 130 to 113 for 2018-2019; three-week ban on unofficial visits and complimentary admissions in November 2018; reduced official visits for 2018-2019 by eight percent; additional institutional and NCAA rules education for coaching staff members; one-year ban on the recruitment of local two-year college prospects (2019-2020); letter of reprimand delivered to coaches; the responsible staff member was suspended from coaching and recruiting for one week in November 2018; and all off-campus recruiting activities must be pre-approved by compliance. RECORDS & HISTORY In April 2018, the coaches engaged in the off-campus recruitment of prospects during a time period when off-campus recruiting was not permitted. The coaches also coordinated a prospect’s unofficial visit to Utah with a local two-year college, which triggered an official visit and caused the institution to exceed the official visit limit for the year. Level II violations were charged for the impermissible recruiting activities. The Level III violation was the result of a prospect-aged son of a coach participating in a single summer team practice. BILL RILEY Play-by-Play 8 2020-21 MEDIA GUIDE RUNNIN’ UTES BA SKE TBAL L THE PAC-12 CONFERENCE LEAGUE HISTORY Built on a firm foundation of academic excellence and superior athletic performance, the Pac-12 Conference renewed its undisputed claim as the Conference of Champions® in 2019-20. The roots of the Pac-12 Conference date back more than 100 years to December 2, 1915, when the Pacific Coast Conference (PCC) was founded at a meeting at the Imperial Hotel in Portland, Oregon. The original membership consisted of four schools - the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Washington, the University of Oregon, and Oregon Agricultural College (now Oregon State University). All four are still charter members of the Conference. Pacific Coast Conference play began in 1916 and, one year later, Washington State College (now Washington State University) was accepted into the league, with Stanford University following in 1918. Pac-12 members have won 305 NCAA team championships on the men’s side, 78 more than the next-closest conference. Men’s NCAA crowns have come at a phenomenal rate for the Pac-12 - 16 basketball titles by six schools, 54 tennis titles, 47 outdoor track & field crowns, and 29 baseball titles. Pac-12 members have won 25 of 49 NCAA titles in volleyball, 46 of 51 in water polo, 31 in skiing, and 25 in swimming & diving national championships. The Pac-12’s excellence is further proven in the annual Division I Learfield IMG College Directors’ Cup competition, the prestigious award that honors the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country. STANFORD won an unprecedented 25th-consecutive Directors’ Cup in 2018-19 to lead the Conference with at least five member institutions earning scores in the top 25 each year of the Directors’ Cup program. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Directors’ Cup was not awarded in 2019-20. Thomas C. Hansen was named the Commissioner of the Pac-10 in 1983, a role he would hold for 26 years until 2009, when he was succeeded by current Commissioner Larry Scott. The University of Colorado accepted its invitation to join the Pac-12 on June 11, 2010, and on June 17, 2010, the University of Utah agreed to join the Conference. The Conference became the Pac-12 and officially began competition on July 1, 2011. It was during the 2010-11 academic year that Scott helped deliver monumental changes that transformed the Conference into a modern 12team league. In addition to expanding to 12 teams, member institutions agreed to equal revenue sharing for the first time in the Conference’s history, created two football divisions - the North and the South, and established a Football Championship Game for the first time. He also secured landmark media rights deals with ESPN and FOX that dramatically increased national exposure and revenue for each school, in addition to establishing Pac-12 Networks which guaranteed enhanced exposure across all sports. Currently, the Pac-12 sponsors 11 men’s sports and 13 women’s sports, with the most recent additions coming in the 2017-18 (women’s lacrosse) and 2015-16 (beach volleyball) academic years. Additionally, the Conference is a member of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) in four other men’s sports and two women’s sports. The Pac-12 Conference offices are located in the heart of San Francisco in the SOMA district. Pac-12 women student-athletes have captured an unmatched 808 NCAA individual crowns, an average of nearly 21 championships per season. Student-athletes have also captured 188 individual titles at combined championships (i.e., skiing and fencing). Ten years later, on July 1, 1978, the University of Arizona and Arizona State University were admitted to the league and the Pacific-10 Conference became a reality. In 1986-87, the league took on a new look, expanding to include 10 women’s sports. Since then, the Conference has been considered the premier league in women’s athletics, securing the most NCAA titles in women’s sports of any conference nearly every year. Stanford UCLA USC California Oregon Colorado Arizona State Utah Arizona Washington Oregon State Washington State SERIES HISTORY On the women’s side, the story is much the same. Since the NCAA began conducting women’s championships 39 years ago, Pac-12 members have claimed at least four national titles in a single season on 29 occasions, including every year since 2000-01 except two (2012-13 and the 2019-20-shortened campaign). Pac-12 teams have captured 193 NCAA women’s titles, easily outdistancing the SEC, which is second with 106. Pac-12 members have dominated a number of sports, winning 24 softball titles, 24 tennis crowns, 17 volleyball titles, 19 of the last 30 trophies in golf, and 17 in swimming & diving. In 1959, the PCC was dissolved and the Athletic Association of Western Universities (AAWU) was formed with Thomas J. Hamilton appointed Commissioner of the new league. The original AAWU membership included California, Stanford, USC, UCLA, and Washington. Washington State joined the membership in 1962, while Oregon and Oregon State joined in 1964. Under Hamilton’s watch, the name Pacific-8 Conference was adopted in 1968. In 1971, Wiles Hallock took over as Commissioner of the Pac-8. The Pacific Coast Conference competed as a 10-member league until 1950, with the exception of 1943-45 when World War II curtailed intercollegiate athletic competition to a minimum. During that time, the league’s first commissioner was named. Edwin N. Atherton was Commissioner in 1940 and was succeeded by Victor O. Schmidt in 1944. No other conference has won double-digit NCAA championships in a single year. In 1922, the PCC expanded to eight teams with the admission of the University of Southern California (USC) and the University of Idaho. Even more impressive has been the breadth of the Pac-12’s success with championships coming in 28 different men’s and women’s sports. HUNTSMAN CENTER Regarded as one of the top college arenas in the nation since opening its doors in 1969, the Jon M. Huntsman Center has provided an imposing home advantage for Utah teams. The storied venue celebrated its 50th anniversary season in 2019-20. Speaking engagements are still prevalent in the Huntsman Center to this day, with recent appearances by the Dalai Lama and Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. Hubert H. Humphrey and President Gerald Ford spoke in the arena in the 1970s. Since opening its doors in November of 1969, the Huntsman Center has been the home to some of the greatest moments in Utah basketball, gymnastics and volleyball history, as well several NCAA Championship events. Commencements for the University of Utah and area high schools, concerts and numerous other special events have also taken place inside the 15,000-seat arena. Architecturally, the Huntsman Center was once well-known for its steel cloud, which hung from the arena’s silver dome interior and held the center court scoreboard, sound and lighting systems. The roof support beams are made out of wood, which made the weight of the steel cloud vital to holding them in place. The building was designed with pristine acoustics in mind. More than eight million fans have watched the Runnin’ Utes in the Huntsman Center, where the team is 603-150 (.801) all-time with winning records in 43 of the last 44 seasons—including eight undefeated campaigns. The Utes have averaged more than 12,000 fans at home three of the past four seasons. Utah ranked second in the Pac-12 and No. 24 in the nation in home attendance in 2015-16. The Huntsman Center underwent a $6 million renovation in the summer of 2014. The original ceiling cloud was replaced with a super grid structure. Energy efficient LED arena lighting, which accommodates instant on and off, was installed. A new state-of-the-art sound system and ceiling mounted sound panels provided greater clarity. The project also included a draping system, offering a more intimate setting in the arena’s lower bowl for smaller events with seating for 8,400. In 2017-18, a newly-designed center-hung video display system, four new corner boards hung from the ceiling structure and four boards on the walls of the lower bowl, totaling $4.1 million. RECORDS & HISTORY SERIES HISTORY A CHAMPIONSHIP VENUE The Huntsman Center ranks third among the nation’s arenas for the most NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament games hosted, with 81 contests taking place in the facility. The JMHC played host to the 1979 NCAA Basketball Championship “Dream Match-Up” featuring Indiana State’s Larry Bird and Michigan State’s Magic Johnson. The men’s NCAA regional tournament came to the Huntsman Center twice (1971 and ‘81). First and second round games took place 13 times (most recently in 2006). The JMHC has hosted NCAA women’s basketball first and second round games twice (2001 and ‘11). Also a famous women’s gymnastics venue, the Huntsman Center has hosted a record nine national gymnastics championships—one AIAW and eight NCAA Championships (most recently in 2007). Utah has also hosted 14 regional meets (most recently in 2018) and two Pac-12 Championships (most recently in 2015). Women’s basketball has hosted NCAA tournament first and second round games in 2001 and 2011. The NCAA women’s volleyball tournament visited the Huntsman Center for the first time in 2017 with the Utes winning the Salt Lake Sub-Regional. MORE THAN JUST ATHLETIC EVENTS Some of the more famous acts to perform in the building’s early days are: Elton John, Steppenwolf, Burt Bacharach with a 37-piece orchestra, Kenny Rodgers, John Denver, The Carpenters, The Temptations, Jackson 5 and The Beach Boys.
