Now in his second year at the helm of the Utah golf program, head coach Garrett Clegg knows his team has the capability to have a great spring. "This team is very capable of having great tournaments every week because we have a lot of fire power," Clegg said. "If we are looking at the big picture, I expect this to be one of the best years we have had in a long time. It already has been. The fall was that way and I would expect the spring to be because these guys are really, really good." In the fall, Utah notched its first team title since 2009 after finishing in first place at the Mark Simpson Invitational following a playoff with Colorado to win the tie-breaker in Erie, Colo. Junior Kyler Dunkle helped lead the Utes to the team title after Dunkle would also win the individual title, marking the first individual title won by a Ute since 2006, and the first time since October of 1990 that Utah had won both the individual and team titles in the same tournament. "We had a great tournament in Colorado and were able to win the tournament," Clegg stated. "Kyler played very well in the event and really well all fall. Our results as a team were very consistent in the fall, but I would say that our play was up and down. Our last tournament kind of left a sour taste in our mouths even though we had a fourthplace finish, we didn't play very well. The offseason is a great time to work on your golf game to make swing adjustments and get reenergized." Dunkle led the Utes throughout the fall season notching three top-20 finishes. Dunkle also led the Utes in scoring average at 71.1 strokes per round, while also recording a team-low round of 64, which he notched during the third round of the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational. "As far as golf goes, we lean pretty heavily on Kyler. He has been our best player and he was our best player last year as far as scoring average. In golf, you need your top ones to perform well consistently and he has done that for us," Clegg said. 4 Along with Dunkle, sophmores Jordan Costello and Mitchell Schow both bring their experience from competing last year to improve this year's squad. Both Costello and Schow appeared in every tournament during the fall. Costello's top finish of the fall came at the Health Plan Mountaineer placing 15th, while Schow notched a 12th place finish at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational. "Jordan was very consistent. We will need someone to be that way in the spring as well. We need guys who are stable and that is what Jordan did for us. Mitchell was a little up and down, but we are going to need our older guys, Jordan, Kyler, and Mitchell, to carry the load and then the freshman can come in and help where they can," Clegg explained. Rounding out the fall lineup, freshmen Blake Tomlinson and Tristan Mandur came in and made an immediate impact to the team. Tomlinson posted his best finish in the opening event, the Gene Miranda Falcon in Erie, Colo., when he finished in a tie for 10th place. Mandur also recorded a top-10 finish, placing sixth overall at the Nick Watney Invitational in Fresno, Calif. "These two freshmen have been great," Clegg said. "They each have top-10 finishes and have each had really key rounds, key moments, and have had great scores. Tristan and Blake are just fantastic players. There is a lot that happens in this semester. Usually, players get more run down than in the fall. It wouldn't shock me if they played great all spring and it wouldn't shock me if they were up and down. I am excited for who they are and what they bring to the table, but I don't have any expectations for them." Utah will open spring competition at the John A. Burns Collegiate in Lihue, Hawaii. The three-day tournament will run Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 15-17, at the Wailua Golf Course. "We have great spring tournaments," Clegg stated. "Our fall schedule was a bit softer than usual, but in the spring, we have a lot of great tournaments. We will compete against some of the very best programs in the country and we will know a lot more about ourselves." WWW.U TA H U T E S . C O M 2 017- 18 U TAH U T E S G O LF ME DIA GUIDE GENE MIRANDA FALCON INVITATIONAL | SEPT. 8-10, 2017 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Utah men's golf team closed out its season-opening tournament on Sunday, taking fifth place at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, which was held at the par-72, 7,511yard Eisenhower Golf Course. Utah finished the three-day event posting a combined score of 12-under par (292-279-281=852) - just one stroke behind No. 12-ranked UNLV, who finished the tournament with a score of 13-under par (851). Wyoming won the event registering a score of 29-under par and Colorado State followed with a score of 24-under par. "Despite our opening round, we played some really good golf this week," said Utah head coach Garrett Clegg. "A key moment for us this week was playing the final three holes. Last season we struggled to close out tournaments and would frequently lose ground over those final three holes. Today, we made seven birdies to only two bogeys on those holes. I am really proud out how we finished the tournament and look forward to what I think will be a great season for us." Junior Kyler Dunkle (-6) and freshman Blake Tomlinson (-5) registered top-10 performances in the first event of the season for the Utes. Dunkle finished in a tie for seventh place, while Tomlinson tied for 10th place overall. Jordan Costello posted a three-day score of 1 -under par and finished in a tie for 24th place, while Mitchell Schow came back to finish in a tie for 46th overall with a score of 3-over par. Tristan Mandur rounded out Utah's scoring with a combined total of 6-over par to finish in a tie for 63rd place. Utah finished the event second overall in a field of 19 teams, registering a score of 3.97 on the par-4 holes this week. The Utes tallied a score of 3.22 on par-3's and 4.80 on the par-5's. Utah will take a couple of weeks off before returning to action Sept. 25-26 at the Mark Simpson Invitational. The event will be held at Colorado National Golf Club in Erie, Colo. Junior Kyler Dunkle earned the program's first regular-season individual title since 2006, while guiding the Utes to the program's first team title since 2009. Utah won in a playoff with tournament host Colorado, after the two teams finished the 54-hole event tied at 22-under par (842). The Utes, who went into the final round in third place behind Colorado and Wyoming, carded a combined 11-under par (277) in Tuesday's third round - the lowest round of the day and the second-lowest round of the tournament (Colorado, 275). Utah earned its first tournament team title since winning the Purple & Red Invitational that was held at Valley View Golf Club in Layton, Utah, back on Sept. 28-29, 2009. Meanwhile, Dunkle would go onto card a final-round 8-under par (64) to finish at 14-under par (70-68-64=202) and take home individual honors. He becomes the first Ute to win an event since Dustin Pimm won the Wolfpack Classic in Reno, Nev., back on Oct. 3, 2006. This also marks the first time Utah won both individual and team titles in the same event since taking home the Skywest Collegiate championship back on Oct. 30-31, 1990. Utah's Phil Holmes won the individual title for the Utes. "This is an exciting win for us," said Utah head coach Garrett Clegg. "There were a total of 19 different team competing in this tournament. Colorado is a great team and were without question the team to beat. Wyoming, who might not be thought of as a traditional golf power, has a strong team this year. They won the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational just two weeks ago. Our team played exceptional golf for three straight rounds to come out on top." Utah won in a tie-breaker with Colorado as both teams played hole No. 18, counting four of the five scores, 201 7 - 1 8 U TAH U TE S GOLF one time. Dunkle and sophomore Mitchell Schow birdied, while sophomore Jordan Costello, freshman Blake Tomlinson and freshman Tristan Mandur recorded pars. Colorado had two players record pars and another player bogeyed. Colorado's final two players conceded their holes. Wyoming would finish third in the tournament, shooting a combined 18-under par (846). UC-Riverside (-6) and Oregon State (-4) rounded out the top five team finishes in the event. Schow would finish in a tie for 12th place posting a three-round score of 5-under par (71-69-71=211) and Mandur tallied a top-20 finish, tying for 20th overall with a score of 2-under par (72-72-70=214). Costello carded a score of even par (71-73-72=216) to finish in a tie for 30th place and Tomlinson rounded out Utah's scoring with a total of 3-over par (71-74-74=219) to finish in a tie for 51st place. Nathan Wunderli played as an individual this week, finishing in a tie for 71st place with a score of 8-over par (76-74-74=224). "Kyler has now played six straight rounds under par and our team has had five straight rounds under par, as well," Clegg said. "The team is just doing a great job out there and that is as a whole, one through five. Dunkle's play was just special today. It isn't every day that you get a round like that. But, the whole group was a big part of the victory. Each player was locked in every single round. So that was great to see." 2017-18 SEASON INFORMATION 2017 FALL RECAPS/FINAL RESULTS Dunkle's score of 8-under par ties for the lowest score under par, while his score of 64 in Tuesday's final round ranks second-lowest all-time. His 54-hole score of 202 is tied for the lowest score in school history. Dunkle led all players in the 108-man field with a 4.33 par-5 scoring average and was third with a 3.73 par-3 scoring average. He also led the field with 19 total birdies. Utah's total team score of 842 through 54 holes ranks third-lowest in school history, while its final round 11-under par, 277, ranks seventh-lowest for 18 holes. The team score of 842 is Utah's lowest in any of its team titles. The Utes lapped the field in both par-4 and par-5 scoring, registering 14-under par on par-4's and 24-under par on the par-5's. Wyoming was second in par-5's with a score of 11-under par. Utah led the field with a total of 65 birdies in the tournament. BYU won the event after registering a combined score of 13-over par (283-293289=865). The Utes have now finished in the top-five of the team standings in all three events they have competed at this season. "We started out the day very poorly," said head coach Garrett Clegg. "It was a very rough day for us and we had a terrible start. Even though it was a disappointing day for us, I am proud of the way they fought back. I am also proud of the resiliency our team showed and to still place third is solid for us. Next week we really need to work on playing well out of the gates. We need to improve how our rounds begin."" Clegg, a former standout golfer for the Utes, was named Utah's new men's head golf coach back on May 3, 2016. In just the first season under Clegg's direction, the Utes managed to have one of its best seasons in recent memory as Utah went on to record a program-best five top-three finishes on the year. Ute golfers would also manage to post seven top-10 individual performances on the season, as well. Utah opened the 2016-17 campaign with a very successful fall season, having registered a pair of second-place finishes and one third-place finish in its first five events. Utah posted back-to-back top-three finishes for the first time since 2009-10, finishing in second-place at the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate and a third-place finish at the Mark Simpson Invitational. Utah opened the month of October with a second-place finish at its home event, the OGIO Invitational, which gave Utah three top finishes through its first three events of the season. Despite a slow start in the spring, the Utes managed to closeout the regular-season with a pair of top-three finishes in two of its final three events. Utah recorded backto-back third-place finishes at both the Duck Invitational and PING Cougar Classic and then went on to finish ninth at a very competitive Hawkeye Invitational in the regular-season finale. The Utes registered as a team, a combined 296.5 strokes-per-round average on the year - Utah's first sub-300.0 average in more than 20 seasons. Gentry Hicks (72.5) and Kyler Dunkle (72.6) also became the first two Utah players to post sub-73.0 averages in a single season in more than 15 years. Clegg was instrumental in Hicks' improvement, as the fifth-year senior recorded the best strokes-per-round average of his career. Following the season, both Hicks and Nathan Wunderli were named to the Pac-12 All-Academic team. A native of Bountiful, Utah, Clegg made the move back to the Salt Lake City area after serving as head coach for five seasons at Washington State. Under Clegg's guidance, the Cougars recorded six regular-season tournament titles and 15 top-five finishes. 201 7 - 1 8 U TAH U TE S GOLF WSU notched three, top-10 finishes at Pac-12 Championship Tournaments under Clegg, which included a ninth-place finish at the 2016 Championships just this past weekend at The Country Club in Salt Lake City. The Cougars managed to move up three spots following the first two rounds of play and went on to post its second-lowest stroke total in the five previous championship tournaments under his direction. Prior to his time in Pullman, Wash., Clegg spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Washington. During his time at UW, the men's program captured back-to-back Pacific-10 Conference titles (2009, 2010) and concluded both seasons with fifth-place finishes at the NCAA Championships. Washington advanced to the NCAA Regionals each of his four seasons and was a three-time qualifier for the NCAA Championships. While with the Huskies, Clegg helped mentor All-Americans Nick Taylor, Richard Lee, Darren Wallace and Chris Williams. In his four seasons he was involved in all areas of the program including coaching, recruiting, fund-raising and tournament operations with a special emphasis on administrative duties. Clegg is a former professional and collegiate golfer who played collegiately at Minnesota for two years where he was a part of the 2002 NCAA championship team before transferring to Utah for his final two seasons. A 2004 graduate of Utah, Clegg was a two-time All-Mountain West Conference selection and placed third in the conference championship tournament in 2003. During his career with the Utes, he won the 2003 Nevada Wolfpack Invitational and the 2003 UC Riverside Highlander Classic. His two regular-season tournament titles is tied for first all-time, as he is just one of two Utah golfers to register multiple tournament titles since 1990. Clegg's 6-under par (66) that he tallied at the Highlander Classic, ranks tied for the seventh-lowest 18-hole score in Utah school history, while his total of 205 (69-68-68) at the Wolfpack Invitational ranks fifth-lowest all-time in a 54-hole event. Clegg is tied for third all-time with five, top-10 finishes in a season and his eightcareer top-10 finishes ranks third most in school history. He is also just one of three Utah golfers to qualify for a NCAA Regional Championship. Clegg finished tied for 81st-place at the 2004 Regional Championship Tournament. 7 COACHING STAFF 2 0 1 7-1 8 U TA H U T E S G O L F Clegg played in the 2003 U.S. Amateur and advanced to the second round of the 2002 U.S. Public Links tournament. Chance Cain enters his second season as the assistant coach for the Utah men's golf program in 2017-18. Cain became Utah's top assistant prior to the 2016-17 season, after serving as a volunteer assistant coach for two seasons at Texas Tech. "I am thrilled to have Chance join our program," said Utah head men's golf coach Garrett Clegg. "Chance has experience working with an elite golf program and he understands what it takes to be part of a program that competes at the highest level of college golf. He is poised to help take our program to a higher level." In his first season with the Utes, Cain helped guide Utah to five top-three finishes in 2016-17. He was also instrumental in helping lead Ute golfers to seven individual top-10 finishes on the year. Under Cain's leadership, the Ute program also managed to register a combined 296.5 strokes-per-round average on the season. While at Texas Tech, Cain assisted in weekly practices and tournament qualifying, while also coaching players through their rounds at different events.
