Summary:Volume2/1980_June09 INTERCOM UNIVERSITY OF UTAH Volunteers elect officers, recognize contributions The hospital's volunteer auxiliary met with hospital administrators for the annual luncheon last weekend to elect new officers and to recognize the thousands of hours and dollars that the volunteers give to University Hospital. New officers of the auxiliary include Rea Barrus, president; Pat Christenson, president-elect; Milt Rosen, 1st vice president; Lill Donaldson, 2nd vice president; Helen Greenland, recording secretary; Eudora Zarr, corresponding secretary; Bonnie Woods, treasurer; and Shirley Butterworth, assistant treasurer. Various fund raising activities by the auxiliary brought in several thousand dollars to the hospital in the last year. These activities included the golf tournament, Christmas bazaar and art sales. During 1979- 80, the auxiliary raised $6,000 to assist in the purchase of new equipment for the Burn Unit. The volunteers made contributions to the school educational program of the Poison Control Center and to the Cartwright Memorial Fund. Auxiliary members also directed the Junior volunteer summer program d the East and West high schools health Careers program. The luncheon also honored individual volunteers who have donated long June 9, 1980 New controller comes home to U Rick Fullmer says his new job as controller for University Hospital is like coming home. Two years ago, Mr. Fullmer was the assistant controller for lower campus. He left to work in private industry but when he got the chance to come back to the University, he took it. "I feel like this is home," he said. Mr. Fullmer graduated in 1972 from Brigham Young University with a degree in accounting and minors in business and French. After graduation he worked for a large CPA firm in Dallas, Texas, but after two years he came back to Utah. In his new position, Mr. Fullmer is responsible for data processing, outpatient and inpatient billing, the cashiers, credit, collections and general accounting. Mr. Fullmer sees his new job as a challenge and " a fun opportunity." He says that during his first months on the job, he will concentrate on upgrading data processing and assur-hours over the years to the hospital. Recognized were: Helen Harwood, 11,000 hours; Frances Stephens, 7,111 hours; Herbert Russell, 5,545 hours; Judy Barnes, Janet Coleman and Marjorie Pace with 3,000 hours; and Anita Bader, 2,611 hours. Over the past ten years, volunteers have donated more than 100,000 hours of service to the hospital. Rick Fullmer ing that the hospital has good overall accounting and budget control. When he's not working with numbers, Mr. Fullmer likes to spend time with his wife, Diana and his six-year old daughter, Rachel. The Fullmers are active in their church and spend much of their spare time gardening and camping. ] Smoking rules: for health What happens when a Med Center employee observes a patient, visitor, or fellow employee smoking in violation of the Center's smoking policy? What is the Center's smoking policy? Basically, the policy prohibits smoking everywhere in the Med Center (continued on opposite side) Hallside Gallery Hallside Gallery's guest artist for June is Mignon Ritchie, former cardiovascular nurse consultant for the Utah Department of Health. Ms. Ritchie's paintings are land- Mignon Ritchie scapes and still lifes in both oils and watercolors. Since her retirement from nursing, she has been studying art in senior citizen's classes. Her artwork has been the subject of a one-woman display in San Francisco, California, as well as of exhibits in the West. Most of Ms. Ritchie's paintings are of western subjects. Ms. Ritchie has received national recognition for her assistance in developing community programs in cardiac nursing. She has been cited for her work by the American Heart Association and the Utah Heart Association. She was program director for the Utah Heart Association for six years. Nurse promoted Alene Russon, R. N., 5E head nurse has been appointed Assistant Directpr of Nursing Service for perinatal and pediatric areas. Her new responsibilities include overall nursing management of the maternity area, newborn intensive care, newborn Airmed transport and pediatrics. Ms. Russon is a graduate of the University of Utah School of Nursing. She has been at University Hospital since 1959 and has been head nurse on 5E for three years. Promotions Gaye Amador to admitting assistant II, inpatient accounting; Yasmin Mueller to clerk II, medical records; Lori Sandlin to dietary attendant, dietary; Andrea Mortensen to lab assistant II, central processing lab; Adeline Petty to case aide, emergency room; Maxine Clark to clinic technician, outpatient clinics. SMOKING RULES continued . . . except in private offices occupied by one person, designated sections of the cafeteria, restrooms, patient rooms other than intensive care, and areas designated by posted signs or by the location of hallway ashtrays in close proximity. The responsibility for enforcing the policy lies with department heads. The policy also may be enforced by the security office. The smoking regulations were written by hospital administration to conform with the Utah Clean Air Act, passed by the Utah Legislature in 1976. Umpires needed The Medical Center's softball league needs umpires. Interested per-sons should contact Bud Zirker at x2283. Softball scores More scores are in from the hospital's softball league. The eight teams have played 4 games each. Pharmacy, Surgery, and Dietary are tied for the lead with 4 wins and no losses. Dietary had been previously listed with 1 win and 1 loss, however, a game on May 7 with Hi Flyers was disputed, giving the win to Dietary. Tied for second place are Operating Room, Penthouse Players, and Radiology with 2 wins and 2 losses. Engineering is in third place with 1 win and 3 losses and Hi Flyers is in last place with 4 losses. Nominations for employee of the month should be sent to the Community Relations Office, AC 111.
