Description
Summary:The Mekhrengsky camp of the Kargopolsky district was formed in the basin of the river Mekhrengi (length of 231 km), which is the right inflow of the river of Emtsa (the basin of the Northern Dvina), flowing from the South to the North and into the lower reach of the river Emtsa. By the middle of the XVI century there was a system of settlements which received administrative registration in the form of volosts and a volostok: Seltso, Tarasov churchyard, and Nikolsky churchyard. The article is devoted to the development of the Mekhrengsky camp’s territory at the beginning of the XVIII century and explaining the features of the rural settlements and country churchyards’. The description of country churchyards is provided as well as the number of villages and households (inhabited and empty) is defined and the reasons for households’ desolation at the beginning of the XVIII century are revealed. The author concludes that by the beginning of the XVIII century there was no noticeable growth of the number of settlements and households – on the contrary, villages of several names disappeared almost completely. Integration of settlements was carried out not because of merging of several villages, but at the expense of the increase in the quantity of the households. Mass desolation of households has been accounted for approximately 50% of the number of all households in volosts of the Mekhrengsky camp.
