June 2016. 1 Background UiT The Arctic University of Norway (UiT) has recently established UiT Open Research Data, an open access service to share, cite, preserve, discover, analyze and reuse research data (http://opendata.uit.no). Academic research most often is a co-operative process, building on dialogue and sharing of insight and data results of earlier works. Open access to scholarly works makes the cooperative process easier. Organizations and research funders such as The Research Council of Norway, The EU, and UNESCO, have drawn guidelines on open access, and many research funders, institutions and scientific journals now require or encourage research authors to make their research data available open access. The service UiT Open Research Data, built on The Dataverse Network open software, with its first member TROLLing – The Tromsø Repository of Language and Linguistics, was launched on 18th June 2014. 2 Expanding the service through a pilot project Building on the experiences from the TROLLing service, a pilot project was launched to expand UiT Open Research Data into a service offering research data archiving for any data collected or generated by researchers and (graduate) students at UiT. The following requirements to the pilot project was listed: - Suggest a technical solution for archiving any type of research data - Suggest support services that will be needed - Have a demo version of the archive service running - Suggest how the service may be implemented in full scale (UiT-wide) - Suggest a workflow model The pilot project was organized as a cooperative project between the UiT’s IT department and the Library. 3 Pilot results The pilot project is just at its end, and all the requirements listed above will be met. This includes workflow models, defining and describing the roles of the IT department and the library. Further it includes support in developing Data Management Plans, teaching of graduate students and researchers in research data archiving, support in metadata descriptions of the data, as well as assistance in curation of the data files. Also, the service has entered an agreement with DataCite, enabling assigning of DOIs to the data sets. 4 A full service Following the pilot project, the launch of a full service, for any UiT researcher and (graduate) student, is planned to be 1st of September 2016. The service will thus assist UiT staff and students to fulfill requirments they are facing regarding open archiving of research data
