Description
Summary:Burney’s original journal is held by the National Library of Australia. James Burney (1750-1821) was 2nd Lieutenant under the command of Captain James Cook and Captain Tobias Furneaux on Cooks second journey to the Antarctic and Pacific during 1772-1773. The sloop “Adventure”, under the command of Furneaux , a Whitby-built collier sailed at 335 tons with a compliment of 81 men. Burney crossed the Antarctic Circle and he was one of the first Englishmen to walk on Tasmania’s southern beaches. He kept a private journal written not for officialdom but for the delight and information of his family and friends. Originally from the Public Records Office of London, this copy was made by R.W.G. in 1925. RS Mp/68
