Description
Summary:TASMANIAN scientists have used Antarctic ice to reveal a profound drying of eastern Australia over the past 1000 years.Unlike Europe, Australia lacks trees with rings that show changes in rain patterns, with normal Australian climate records only going back about 100 years. However, a team led by Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Co-operative Research Centre glaciologist Tessa Vance collected ice core samples that provided 1000 years of rainfall data. The research by Dr Vance and colleagues at the University of Tasmania showed a direct correlation between the eastern Australian rainfall record and the sea salts deposited by winds at Low Dome in East Antarctica.
