Summary:The SeaIcePhysicsandEcosystemeXperiment(SIPEX)wasconductedintheEastAntarcticpackicezone between115-1301E from9September11October,2007.Insitumeasurementsofsea-iceandsnow propertieswereconductedat15icestations,togetherwithship-basedASPeCtobservations.Theice andsnowthicknessvariedconsiderablyindifferentregionsofthepackice,withparticularlythickice associatedwithdeformationandastrongslopejetinthesouthwestofthestudyregion.Themeanice thicknesswas0.99m(1.57mexcludingthenorthernmarginalicezones),butvariedfrom0.61malong thesouthernlegto1.80malongthewesternleg,withpocketsofconsiderablythickericeinsomeregions.Swellwasobservedontwooccasionspenetratingmorethan330kmsouthoftheiceedgeintoregionswith80-100%iceconcentration.IcethicknessescalculatedfromnearcoincidentICESatlaseraltimetry(1.74m)aresimilartothe in-situ observationsinthecentralpack(1.57m).
