Summary:This chapter considers the place of climate change in Australia's Antarctic agenda, arguing that since the prohibition on minerals exploitation introduced with the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty (Madrid Protocol), this issue provides an important justification for Australian engagement with the continent, and especially a justification for maintaining the expense of a substantial presence.
