Summary: | Preliminary results of a series of model scale propellerexperiments are presented. A large (0270mm) model of ahighly skewed controllable pitch propeller was tested in bothopen water and ice covered water in the ice tank at the Institutefor Marine Dynamics. Both the open water and ice experimentswere done at four different pitch settings, each over a range ofadvance coefficient. The ice strength and the depth cut into theice by the propeller were varied in the ice tests. The main aimsof the experiments were to measure the effects of thesevariables on blade loads, in addition to their effects on shaftloads. Shaft loads were measured using conventionaldynamometry. Loads on one blade were measured using a hubmountedblade dynamometer designed and built for these tests. The blade dynamometer is described and some preliminaryshaft and blade load measurements are presented and discussed. |
