Description
Summary:The Northwest (NW) Pacific is now one of thebetter investigated deep-sea areas in the world.More than 20 expeditions have been performedin this region on board the RV Vityaz in the midt-wentiethcentury (Monin 1983). Subsequently, the diverse and abundant deep-sea benthic faunafound in the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench (KKT)and the adjacent abyssal plain, one of the mostproductive oceanic regions in the world, and hasbeen described in numerous publications, e.g. involumes of the transactions of the P. P. ShirshovInstitute of Oceanology 1955, 1970, 1971 (Sokolova1976, 1981). In these volumes, information onbiotic and abiotic environmental parameters ofthis unique area, such as the composition of taxa, first data on hydrology, topography, chemicalcharacteristics, and organic matter of the bottomwater, and the characteristics of sediments of theKKT area, are presented. Based on these data, achecklist of free-living invertebrate species of theRussian Far Eastern Seas was published (Sirenko2013). Recently (2010-2016), four internationaldeep-sea expeditions to the NW Pacific wereperformed as German-Russian joint ventures forthe study of the composition of meio-, macroand megafauna.
