Summary: | The Southern Ocean Observing Systemwas established by SCAR and SCOR in2011 and has been steadily developingits work. In this paper, we summarisethe outcomes of strategic planning over2015 and a recent meeting of the SSCand workshop aimed at implementingthe strategic plan. SOOS is developingregional and capability working groupsto implement its strategy. The regionalworking groups will be important toCCAMLR in providing data relevant toconservation and fisheries in differentparts of the CCAMLR area. The capabilityworking groups aim to develop long termcapabilities of SOOS. Those of interestto CCAMLR include Working Groups onEcosystems, Acoustics and Monitoring ofpack ice seals. The development of theSOOS Data Management System andPortal will also be important to CCAMLR.These are described more fully in the paper. In conclusion, we discuss the value ofdeveloping a partnership between SOOSand CCAMLR to help develop a positiverelationship between the CCAMLR andinternational scientific communities and toprogress the international coordination andassessments of climate change impacts onSouthern Ocean ecosystems, the focus of aconference in 2018.
