Summary: | Communication is fundamental things that very important for our life. There is no activity can be done without communication. A person with good communication competence will have good performance in interaction and relationship with surroundings. Communication competence is a function of one’s ability to adapt to differing social constrain in appropriateness and effectiveness way. Communication competence is very important for adolescent, specifically for early adolescent. The use of language in life time can have affect on communication competence. Being bilingual or monolingual will effect one’s communication competence. This research aims to know the difference of communication competence between bilingual and monolingual early adolescent. The subject is chosen using simple random sampling, there are 160 subject in aged 12-15 years old. Measurement tool used in this research is communication competence scale according to theory proposed by Brian Spitzberg and William Cupach (in Greene & Burleson, 2003; Payne, 2005), and the component is knowledge, motivation, and skill. Based on estimate of the items by using Pearson Product Moment and reliability of the power test by using the technique of Alpha Cronbach coefficient, and overall alpha coefficient is 0.916. The analysis result by using statistic independent sample t-test shows score t=3.50 and p=0.001 that less than p=0.05, that means hypothesis nol (Ho) is rejected and hypothesis alternative (Ha) is accepted, that means there are difference of communication competence between bilingual and monolingual early adolescent. As addition result, there is no difference of communication competence based on age and gender, and there is difference of communication competence between bilingual and monolingual early adolescent based on component and behavior indicator. 071301028
