This lecture examines the descriptions of Viking deeds in the Icelandic Sagas and runic inscriptions. From the eighth to the eleventh century intrepid Norse men ventured out to sea, from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean countries, from the North Atlantic to the Middle East, discovering new lands like Iceland, Groenland and the legendary Vinland (Newfoundland), plundering and trading or serving in mercenary armies. Their impact on the other European countries contributed also to a better geographical knowledge of Scandinavia and in their own Nordic countries, when the Viking age faded away, a new religion and a new royal authority had been firmly established.
