Description
Summary:[letterhead]Feb 20, 1900My dear Mr. Muir,I have seen quite a number of the members of the Harriman expedition and they tell me that great changes have taken place in the glaciers of Glacier Bay. Mr. [Sarmett?] is to send me his map of the end of the Muir glacier and Mr. Gilbert has sent me photographs of Hugh Miller & Reid Inlets. Did you succeed in deciding whether [Render?], Carroll and Geikie glaciers have changed since your visit in 1896? and did you notice changes in any other glaciers? I am now making up my annual report. In the Sept. number of the London Geographical Journal, Klotz of the Canadian Boundary Commission thinks from his interpretation of Vancouver's narrative that Brady glacier has advanced two or three miles in the last hundred years. Do you think this could be correct? The Gituya Bay glaciers seem also to have materially advanced, but most of the glaciers of that region have receded.02668 [letterhead]Tho' I have not been in Alaska I have not neglected glaciers. I was in Switzerland in '96 '97 and '99 and made studies of the Forno glacier. I find the ideas regarding the vertical part of the movement, which I published four years ago, confirmed. I am writing a paper on the subject now and will send you a copy when it is printed. In 1897 I also made a visit to Russia in connection with the International Congress of Geologists and visited the Caucasus Mountains and Mt. Ararat. I made out three glaciers on the latter, and about 1/4 of its surface I did not see. With kind regards and hoping you will be east before longI am yours sincerelyHarry Fielding Reid.Have you heard what effect last September's easthquake ahd on the Alaskan glaciers?02668
