C. Sept 16, '95Dear Mr. MuirI have returned you see safely from my circumnavigation, and now I know for myself that the earth is round. No more hearsay evidence to be accepted on that point.I shall speak disrespectfully of the equator too if I want to, for I went over the imaginary hair line on the water02023 [2]and saw Java. I had some compunctions down there I must confess at having so much botanically wasted on me, who doesn't know a cotyledon any too well. It was glorious though, that vegetation--the whole island cultivated from end to end like a botanical garden and that [Buitengong?] garden is the ideal one of all I saw.The Himalayas are all they are cracked up to be, too. I saw them at Darjeeling, Simla and Khyber Pass, and they were[3]giants. I was sold on Mt. Everest--for after starting in the middle of the night twice to go up to a high place and see the sun rise over it, what did I see as the biggest, highest thing on earth? A little white nub of a thing off on the sky line, just a size larger than my thumb. I'll back my Mt. Ruhamah against it any time when it has its snow on.Did the attorney Sukersley ever save anything for me from the wreck of the California Magazine?
