I am going back to Alaska this summer to extend my [2] 01575map and observations to the upper part of Glacier Bay, and also down Main Valley to Lynn Canal. I shall make observations on the motion of the ice in the neighborhood of [illegible] Glacier, and of the melting there & at some other points. I shall be very glad for any suggestions that you may like to make. I am sorry to say that none of my former party go back with me; Cushing is studying in Europe; Mr [Reid?] is in2 [3][letterhead]his fathers’ store; C[illegible] is in Colorado; Adams has a place in the Lawrence Scientific School of Harvard College; and Morse is on some railroad survey. I might have the pleasant surprise of finding you again at the glacier. Mr. Russell does not return to the St. Elias region this summer. The geographic Society does not wish to spend so much money on explorations, but prefer to diffuse the present stock of geographic knowledge [4] 01575by lectures, etc. Do you not think the B.C.SS. Co. would grant me some reductions in charges this summer? What I have done & what I shall do this year, will certainly be of advantage to them. Whom had I better write to about the matter? Probably it would be better to address some indivial member of the company, rather than the company in general. The earliest steamer I can get is the Queen sailing from Tacoma on June 21. As I can leave here on June 10, I 3 [5][letterhead]will have about five days at leisure on the way across the country, and I thought if the weather was good that I should like to spend them making the ascent of Mount Rainier.
