Yosemite Syringa leaving its wealth of white fragrant bloom upon the rugged granite boulders about the Bridal Veil Pothole Garden 10 Artemisia 15 Ivesia 29 Erigerons (blue) narrow leaved 2 Yarrow 4 grass tufts, of 2 species, & a few sedges 6 Mimulus 1 Polygonum 2 fern fronds (Pellaea) The boggy part of the basin filled with mosses. 84 fascicles of yellow pine needles had 25 needles forming one tassel. One branch 6 years old P. [Pinus] contorta had 356 pairs of needles [Picea grandis] Abies concolor at Shadow Lake 61 inches diameter 4ft [feet] above the ground [P (Picea) grandis] A [Abies] concolor 22 ft [feet] 10 inches circumference at head of lake, the noblest specimen in the basin growing on rich aluvium [alluvium]. Cone of yellow pine at Shadow Lake 7 inches long 3½ in dia [diameter] at base. growing in dark purple clusters of 2 or 3 on two year old wood. Vol [volume] No [number] 11 108 3d [third] Yo [Yosemite] Lit [Little] Vol. [Volume] No [number] 12 pg [page] 122 Or 4th of other number Heavy tributary from Cathedral peak with considerable pressure from Mt [Mount] Clark tributary together with thrust of main Lyell glacier have made basins for a lake & meadow & grove here among the hardest of deep sunken domes Nowhere will you find waving luxuriance of forests & broad leaved grasses planted more abruptly against glossy unflawed porphery [porphyry]. The lower the domes the harder they are both from having been less exposed to the weather & from their depth below the slates. [sketch: Sec. (Section) of channel of Merced] Above this Yosemite the river pours between domes so resisting that it has not cut more than four feet into the granite in making itself a channel as may be seen by the fact that from the bottom of the stream to the clean striated glacier polished rocks on its banks the height is only 4 feet, & the highest water mark only 7 feet. Some spots where the rock is more resisting the whole amount of erosion by the river is less than one foot. The river ...
