One branch 6 years old P. [Pinus] contorta had 356 pairs of needles [Picea grandis] Abies concolor at Shadow Lake 61 inches diameter 4ft [feet] above the ground [P (Picea) grandis] A [Abies] concolor 22 ft [feet] 10 inches circumference at head of lake, the noblest specimen in the basin growing on rich aluvium [alluvium]. Cone of yellow pine at Shadow Lake 7 inches long 3½ in dia [diameter] at base. growing in dark purple clusters of 2 or 3 on two year old wood. The lower the domes the harder they are both from having been less exposed to the weather & from their depth below the slates. [sketch: Sec. (Section) of channel of Merced] Above this Yosemite the river pours between domes so resisting that it has not cut more than four feet into the granite in making itself a channel as may be seen by the fact that from the bottom of the stream to the clean striated glacier polished rocks on its banks the height is only 4 feet, & the highest water mark only 7 feet.
