After remarkably smooth voyage. Even the Columbia bar almost without breakers Arrived at Astoria 9 A.M, left 9.45. Arrived Portland 5.45 PM. Dist[Distance] from Astoria 98 ms[miles]. Dredger at work churning mud pumping it [aboard] & letting it pour over in heavy streams to be carried off by current. River views fine. Picturesque bluffs of [trap] regular or bent vs horizontal. River now at ordinary high water mark. Were met at dock by the Harrimans JB[John Burroughs] Gannett & others who had gone by rail. Bade goodbyes. Was invited to visit at Arden. Burroughs accompanied us to station & Palache. Left for home at 7 P.M. Timber along Columbia mostly Doug sp[Douglas spruce].
