Got sight of 3 polar bears [which] turned out after hot pursuit to be swans, and possession of a few goslings and plants. Arrived at vessel at 8 P.M. and immediately sailed for St. Matthew Island. No natives seen. Land still desolate. [July] 14th. Rather dull and wet at times, slight showers and tendency to fog.
