Summary:[July] 13th. Started early for [East] end of St. Lawrence, passed King [Island] at 7 A.M. Rain. Arrived at 4:30, wind high and rainy, yet 2 boats put off, botanists, birders, etc. Took 50 minutes to reach shore after hard pull. Got sight of 3 polar bears [which] turned out after hot pursuit to be swans, and possession of a few goslings and plants. Arrived at vessel at 8 P.M. and immediately sailed for St. Matthew Island. No natives seen. Land still desolate. [July] 14th. Rather dull and wet at times, slight showers and tendency to fog.
