Good botanists mistook it for salix. July 3 Went on picnic to Wood Island with Mrs. Harriman at 9.30; returned at 3 P.M. Found part of old forest and got good [approximating] to age of 10 spruces: one nearly 5 [feet] [diameter] perhaps 300 [years] old. See last [page]. Found Moneses in fine ferny mossy woods, some good sized cottonwoods seen.
