Description
Summary:walk to an extensive moutoneed mass of gray lichened gneiss or granite rock, with acres of Kalmia 2 to 6 ft high; few tufts grass, a tree - oak, birch, pine, maple, chestnut - here and there; views up and down main valley very fine, many small streams and small bogs over all the hills. The hill trends in gen show that the ice sheet flowed S easterly; the sheer broken cliff faces on the moutoneed rocks tell the same, and on the quartz veins weathered out to a height of 2 or 3 inches a few spots are polished and striated, and these striaea also indicate the S ely flow this portion of the bottom of the gl sheet. The loftiest moutoneed hill mass hereabouts that stands out in midd of valley 5 or 600 ft high tells the same story. Sfter rambling over Ne side of val, noting springs, mosses, ferns, bushes, trees, etc. Chestnut 5 ft dia, white pine over 100 ft h and growing well, white p 3 ft dia torn to pieces by lightening, a fw others as large standing alone, very bushy, shortstemmed, perhaps not over 50 ft h nearly as wide, dia 3 ft, innumerable branches, grass everywhere lush between rocks. P.M. to Sw on top of moutoneed rock holl; glaciated quartz viens, 3 inches weathered. [Oct 31]. Visit rake factory; could make rakes ½ cost of those made here. Girls start in donkey cart with handful of greenbacks to buy cats this morning. At 1 P.M. all start for NY, arrive at 7, got to Johnson’s. At dinner meet hero Hobson, a quiet keen handsome fellow, firmness, daring shown in face; is writing his story at Johnson’s home. My visit to Gilder’s has been altogether delightful, charming family, liked Mrs. G, fine character, the whole atmosphere. Spoke with Choate hr or two on way up. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/jmj-all/3560/thumbnail.jpg
