Frostbitten vines look brown & dismal but the damage on the whole is much less than was feared. Only tender tips& lvs [leaves] killed. Thursday 23 X Rain, regular southeast winter storm. It began early this morning or late last night. Fair an hour or so in the forenoon, solid continuous all P.M. & still no sign of clearing. Friday 24 Still storming this morning. Faired an hour at noon. Rain & hail a merry dance P.M. & at 9 P.M. fair. X Wrote to F. George about Valona affairs & to R.U. Johnson inviting him to come to Alaska, about Yo [Yosemite] affairs & forest. To Sargeant sending Bidwell’s statement about Sequoia, to Bidwell, Muir McKilney, S.H. Young asking about Stikeen, Mr. Benton, Mazamas, Miss Sudmore telling about Glacier Bay discovery & maps. Saturday 25 Went to the city to attend Sierra Club meeting. Had talk with Solomon’s & Young LeConte on map making, naming, bragging etc. Voted for new directors. X Wrote to Young & -? Bought tub for bath etc. Saw Mr. Magee hopes he may go to Alaska with his boys. X Rain with showers. Sunday 26 Staid [stayed] at Isaac Uphams last eve. Lonely there after [Mrs.] Upham’s death. Talked till 11 o’clock. On Religion, Education, public speaking, Alaska, Sierra, etc. Got home at 11:30 A.M. Rain in light showers.
