Description
Summary:hope to get around to our old landing tomorrow morning, should the weather continue clear. Lying off tonight waiting light, vessel pitching heavily. Aug 31. Cold, howling storm-day. Lying to all afternoon. Gale from the N.E. rather increasing now, 9:15 P.M. Were in sight of the pack this morning at 8 o’clock. Wind blowing on shore of Wrangel Land and therefore did not consider it safe to attempt approaching it too nearly. Are now within 20 miles of Herald Island, sailing and drifting to the S.E. Our chances of making another landing on Wrangel Land seem unpromising now. Our ice-breaker damaged and we were compelled to cut it away, hoping may not need it again this year. Dismal sky, reddish purple at night. Temp. 35o. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/jmj-all/3164/thumbnail.jpg
