Summary:30 Set out to climb 2d mtn [mountain] 3000 ft [feet] h [high] on E [east] side gl [glacier]. Met many tourists returning from walk on the gl [glacier] snout. & had to answer many questions. Had a hard climb but [glorious] wonderful views, sketched gl [glacier] & most of its founts. Found many fine alpine flrs [flowers] Anemone on top 2 Cassiopes in shaggy mats 3 or 4 willows alders 15 ft [feet] h [high]. Lupine large, hairy blue 18 in [inches] h [high], hedysarum parnassia, phlox, solidago, dandelion, white bryanthus, daisy, pedicularis, Epilobium, etc with grasses, sedges, mosses, lichens, forming delightful deep spongy shaggy sod. Vaccinium, [Burly] [well] [fed] Bees large as thumbs, yellow, new [species], wood chuck stood erect & piped dolefully for 31 an hr [hour] cha chee, with jaws absurdly stretched to emit so thin a note [Sketch: rusty looking seedy fellow] Also the smaller marmot striped wh [which] stood erect & [cheered] [preached] like doug [Douglas] squirrel. Saw 3 or 4 species of birds one moved from her nest at my feet - a finch. Another had young A ptarmigan also had a fine brood of young able to run well. small brown bunches of downy silk, - The mother very lame of course. almost stepped on the family ere they scattered.
