Description
Summary:20 over stratified washed moraines have little or no motion. They have been advanced at least a mile over the old reformed moraines. As is shown by the overlying angular fresh mor [moraine] deposits now being laid down & wh [which] are continuous with medial mors of the gl [glacier] now in motion. In the old stratified mor trunks & branches of trees occur at a height of about 100 ft [feet] or a little more above tide water in a finer muddy stratum all at one height, as far as I have seen. Wood sound some of it. Have not yet compared with opp [opposite] shore deposits. No doubt similar That the glacier was once 21 withdrawn considerably back of its present limits seems plain. Immense torrents of water filled in the Inlet with stratified gravel etc & for hundreds of yrs [years] a settled condition of the weather allowed forests to grow on it [them]. Then the gl [glacier] advanced over the deposits at least a mile The snout in center probably 2 ms [miles] or more carrying away the flood deposits, reopening the inlet, uprooting trees Then great thaw wh [which] made the flood that deposited the trees occurred. Also the trees wh [which] grew around the shores above reach of floods were shed off perhaps by thawing of soil resting on buried margin of gl [glacier] left in retreating & protected by mor [moraine] https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/jmj-all/2859/thumbnail.jpg
