Description
Summary:10 Juneau is on mainland opp [opposite] the Douglas Island Mills. Quite a village. Well supplied with stores, churchs, etc a dance house in wh [which] Inds [indians] are supposed to show native dances of all sorts. A Mr Brooks prints a paper here. [Gained] much information on St Elias Mt Wrangel Cooks Inlet & Prince Williams Sound regions. He told Russell that he would never reach the summit of Elias. that it was inaccessible etc. He saw no gls [glaciers] that discharged bergs into sea at Cooks Inlet but many in Prince Williams Sound. Left Juneau at noon June 22, Had good view of Auk Gl [Glacier] at mouth of channel between Douglas Island & mainland. & of Eagle Gl [Glacier] a few miles up the Coast from the Auk on E [east] side Lynn Canal. Then the Davidson Gl [Glacier] came in sight. finely curved all these & striped with medial 11 mors. & besides these many others of every size & [pattern] mostly comp small [decking] the noble mtn [mountain] spins between wh [which] Lynn Canal lies. Completing the sculpture. The mtns [mountains] on either hand & at the head of the Canal very striking rich in sculpture & sustained all the way. The day was bright the mtns [mountains] clear with just clouds enough to show off the mtns [mountains] to advantage which like two separate & distant ranges stretched [onward] into the distance in sustained grandeur, each mtn [mountain] with its gls [glaciers] & clouds & fine sculptures glowing bright [& Glorious] in soft smooth graded light. Some of the summits on the main axis may be seen from the lower portion of the canal. Few of the mtns [mountains] on these two spins exceed 5000 ft [feet] in height above the sea yet they look much higher, as one naturally associates great height to mtns [mountains] https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/jmj-all/2854/thumbnail.jpg
