Summary: | John Muir Martinez Cal 1890 Left San Francisco for Glacier Bay Alaska on the Strmr [Steamer] City of Puebla June 14th 1890, 10 A.M. This being my 3rd trip to S.E. Alaska & 4th to Alaska including W. & N. Alaska as far as Oonalaska & Pt. Barrow. The bar at Golden Gate was smooth. Weather Cool & pleasant. Redwoods in sheltered coves approach the ocean closely, on hills windswept, beaten with scud bare of trees, tops of redwoods dwarfed & shorn appearing here & there all along the coast. June 15. Stiff head wind almost a gale make but little headway tho this is a fast ship. Conifers along Oregon coast get nearer the sea level, [ ] endure the salt foam & sand better than sequoia. firs spuce mostly. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/jmj-all/2849/thumbnail.jpg |
