Description
Summary:Pt. Arrived P.M. All the party except Kelly, Palachi and Morris, who were on the mainland, joined us here. Soon started for the mainland camp 30 [miles] distant. Launch lowered and the party brought aboard at 8:30 P.M. and we started for Kodiak. [Professor] Ritter gave general [account] of the work and fortunes of the party. They found the population of the town l man who kept store, supervised cod and salmon fisheries no canning, all salted. Were successful in collections. Caught devil fish 10 [feet] spread of arms, 50 lbs. weight, and some new things in the warm and low down things. Spoke of the wonderful richness, luxuriance of the grass cover and wondered when it would be put to human use. [Professor] Saunders spoke of plants of land and water, both rich, of coal mines, tertiary, etc. Great growth of alder. None in Behring Sea or Oonalaska. Fire probably prevents both bushes and forest trees. Young Kincaid’s address on insects far the best of the 3, one of the very best of the trip. He has genius and will be heard of later, I hope. Very few beetles on island, probably on [account] of mice. Few butterflies on [account] of very high winds. They flew up a few feet and made haste to dive into bushes, having learned caution the others of course blown into sea. Told of several remarkable cases of mimicry. Yellow tailed bumble bee a strong stinger and let alone to great extent, mimicked so closely by stingless flies as at first to mislead the very elect. All cheered him heartily at close. July 19. Fairly clear. After breakfast were off https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/jmj-all/3695/thumbnail.jpg
