The slopes with sp[ruce] & hem[lock] rising sharply above each other in crowded ranks. Rich green [area] slope sunny peaceful. Went ashore & climbed few 100 ft in the woods along hearty [bouncing] stream. [Roots] of trees mossy interlaced ferny tangled. Devils club higher Aspidium. P.[Picea] spruce Started at 1 P.M. from Orca to Columbia Merriam Gl[acier] near Valdes, arrived at 5.30. The gl occupies a broad (8 ms) fiord. Short (5 or 6 ms) Blocked & interrupted in part by islands most of wh[ich] are completely overgrown with sp[ruce] & hem[lock]. The cascading tribs[tributaries] many of them flat & broad make a glorious show as the front is approached The discharging portion 2 ms wide The left E. side is rounded & has gravelly sandy flat in front & an island The trees on point of island have been uprooted by advance of the sea Some are leaning like those of Brady Gl[acier]. Comparatively few bergs are now being given off The wall is white & has but few apparent streaks of medial moraine [Sketch: Looking N W from 8 ms S of Valdes Gl. main Distance 50 ms] https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/jmj-all/3644/thumbnail.jpg
