Description
Summary:No Douglass yet though here at Gardeners 4800 ft. Aug 22. Frost here, lovely calm morning, the touch of the dawn on trees. Song of birds. Many campers here - 3 miles from Big Trees - photo trees. Pteris becoming abundant. All ground not in reserve naked with sheep. Arrived at Big Trees about 10am. Went to South grove pm. Starting at 1. Magnificent view of heavely forested slopes. Sugar pine in glory especially on the S. slopes of Stanislaus and of Beaver creek. Some trees a mile or two south of S. grove, almost the finest I ever saw. Beaver a fine stream, size of Yosemite creek. Streams in gen. never so low as now says Spivey in 40 years. South grove fine as any gloriously wild with underbrush, especially abundant is very tall azalea. Aug. 33. Spent day in photographing trees, difficult in getting in whole trees. Tall pine 9 ft dia 4 ft above ground on edge of sandy flat fronting the grove. Aug 24. At Murphy dull choking atmosphere. Drive to Rancheria - 2 old Ind. Men, one with marked face begged with letter. Several very old women selling baskets. Many dogs of all breeds. Camp on hill. Dr. M photoed group - passing away. Interesting, though referred to as mere diggers. Aug 25. Arrived at Sonora- Grand development of Sabine pines. Young ones make generally airy conical heaps of gray feathery lvs. Some quite massive nearly spherical instead of beamy. Divided into 2 or 3 great limbs - Saw Sugar Yel. Sabine and Libo together at 2500 or 3000. Orange and fig and vine at Parrots. Ferry growing well Temp 100o river in open val. Nat. Bridge small affair - a few miles N of Ferry. Aug 26. Long dusty ride from Sonora to Cold Spring. Met many teams. Sugar p. lumber. 12 horse team hauling 12.000 ft. Cold Spring 5.700 in Sugar and Yelo. P. Kellogg oak. Sugar p. at 3.000. Masses of smooth bossy lichened ancient granite glaciated rocks curious in green meads and forests. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/jmj-all/3400/thumbnail.jpg
