Description
Summary:Aug 15. Camp Hetch Hetchy. Set out, Mr K and I for little Hetch Hetchy. Had fine day in the purely wild park - It is about 1 ½ or perhaps a bit more long, by ½ to ¼ wide at bottom and has lofty beveled walls fluted with avalanche channels - walls from 2 to 3000 ft or more high, sculpture not very striking 0 about meadow - lovely groves of K oak and yellow pine. Saw two deer bounding over tall ferns and grass. Returned to H H upper fall and pool at 3 pm after obtaining 4 fine views. Spent the rest of the day fishing without success, some days the trout will not rise to the fly, at others especially towards evening they bite right heartily. In the morning however Mr. Elwell was more successful having caught a dozen in Rancheria creek. This evening we had visitors, three young ladies from Garrotte who had never been so far from home before. With trout we had cookies and cake in abundance and fresh milk for coffee. Mr. Elwells partner a cousin of one of the ladies had charge of the party, they cared for their horses and rode well. Aug 16. Set out for Crockers. Mr. Lukens and I rode ahead, camped for lunch an hour at charming cool stream 8 miles from H H. Thence lovely forest ride all the way to Crockers, distance 20 miles, the last half wagon road. Saw many mountain quail half grown, one pursued by hawk. Saw 4 grouse white rim on tail, flew up from one of many mountain glades, dry and green. Elwells cattle ranch the only inhabited place on road, 5 miles from Crockers. The glory of this trip in the forests and many cool streams ideal camp grounds. The lower half of H H about equally divided by the river, upper mostly on S side. Aug 17. At Crockers, learning to rest in bed and chair - appetite good mean to stay a week, wrote to Louise - had a short ride half dozen miles through glorious woods to outlook over sea of evergreens the dividing ridge complicated every hollow full of sugar pines, siver fir, libo etc - No finer sugar pines in Sierra dogwood, hazel, gooseberries, chamebatia. Many trees killed or half killed by shinglemakers. Aug 18. Short stroll with ladies to Quimby’s arastra and cottage- charming palce - hop vines around cottage, pleasant garden - dog caught a ground squirrel Stellar Jay commonest bird, snow bunting, black head and breast, white tail black in middle feathers, white bill, quite common. Ride through the forest to Elsworth cattle ranch and back 10 miles - a charming experience starting at 5 pm returned at 8 - no sunglare - cool fragrant, beautiful subdued sifting, light diffused softly fitting the stillness and hushed tranquility. Long gold bars here and there resting on chumoebatia carpet beneath and between the grand sugar ps. Silver swaths of the river (S.F. Tuol) Trout leaping - wagon road all the way - Found a company of soldiers at Elsworth, camped 15 or 20 horses all good size. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/jmj-all/3389/thumbnail.jpg
