The sticks do not seem to be very ancient, not yet petrified – perhaps a century, considering that they have been preserved by frost. There is one uprooted alder in the heap that is 7 inches dia[meter], while none are found growing nearer than 50 yards from it. The amount of bluff worn away may have been considerable. Fossil bones of buffalo, muskox, deer, and mammoth discovered here, that seem to have come out of the tundra, or perhaps down the river.
