already at Point Barrow and had picked up all the wrecked sailors. The fog lifted, however, shortly after noon, and we went on. Discovered 6 ships at anchor opposite the Indian village. One of them the “Legal Tender”, with letters causing extraordinary rejoicing. They were more than2 months old, but were the very freshest and best appreciated that I ever received in my life. Wife and child well. Between Pt. Barrow and Pt. Beltcher [Belcher] and Icy Cape the movements of the ice are very variable from season to season and also throughout each season. It seldom leaves this party of the coast very far, some years not at all, and is always liable to be driven close in shore by a few hours of stiff, N.ly, favorable wind.
