Summary:Over the middle and high latitudes of the northern hemisphere, the most prominent mode of atmospheric variability is the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). The spatio-temporal characteristics of the NAO variability are reviewed in this lecture. The general state of knowledge on the complex dynamical processes governing the NAO is described. Emphasis is laid on teleconnections and ocean signals known to modulate the temporal excitation of the NAO.
