Description
Summary:Sea lice cause significant challenges for the aquaculture industry due to welfare problems, loss in biomass, delice treatments and interactions between escaped farmed salmon and wild stock. Cleaner fish will naturally eat parasites and have become an important biological resource for preventing and controlling the amount of salmon lice. The rapidly increasing use and demand for cleaner fish has led to an increased focus on how this affects cleaner fish. The purpose of this master thesis has been to investigate how welfare justifiable it is to use cleaner fish in Norwegian sea pens, and to assess whether the use act in line with sustainable development. To answer the problem, an integrative literature study was conducted, which included both empirical and theoretical research through an approximate systematic search. Other relevant literature was included through manual searches. The results showed that there are still challenges with high injuries, disease and high mortality in cleaner fish, in addition to escapes that create a risk of infection transmission and genetic changes in natural stocks. This indicates that there are still significant challenges associated with fish welfare and sustainable use of cleaner fish, even though fish farms undoubtedly work hard to facilitate better conditions. From an animal welfare and sustainability perspective, this use is not acceptable until improvements can be documented.
