Description
Summary:Southern polar projection in full color with two small additional polar projections showing the extent of each ocean. In the upper left of this map is a detailed inset of the South Shetland and Orkney Islands and below these are Deception Island, Juan Fernandes Island, Aukland Island, Warekauri Island and a polar region map. On the right is an inset of Tristan da Cunha Island, the Kerauelen Islands, Crozet Islands, Prince Edward Island, New Amsterdam and St. Paul Islands, Victoria Land and a hemisphere map of the Southern Hemisphere. The discovery routes and dates of many parts of the Southern Pole are noted. The green lines show the ice movements. The Perthes publishing house and their principal map-maker, Augustus Petermann gained an enviable reputation for producing the finest and most accurate maps of their day. This detailed map of the Antarctic regions was one of only seven lithographed maps in the fifth edition of Stieler's Hand-Atlas and it presents all their characteristic attention to detail. Scale 1: 40,000,000.
