Description
The thesis paper Stories in foreign languages and the role of parents is an empirical thesis paper where we portray stories in foreign languages as a tool for teaching foreign languages in the childhood. We focus mostly on the role of parents on reading stories in foreign languages to their children. The empirical part of the thesis discusses the opinions of parents on reading stories in foreign languages to their children. Because of the presumption that the majority of parents are not reading stories in foreign languages to their children, we created alternative questions for parents who read stories in foreign languages to their children and for parents who do not, and searched for causes for that.We concluded that parents mostly do not read stories in foreign languages to their children despite the fact that the majority of all the questioned parents think that children can learn foreign languages in such a way or that their children at least learn some vocabulary of a foreign language, respectively. Higher educated parents read to their children stories in foreign languages more often. It is good to know that children themselves often want from their parents to read to them stories in foreign languages. It is a positive realization that children do show interest in reading content in foreign languages and to participate in other activities that are related to foreign languages. Parents use different strategies when reading stories in foreign languages, which help their children to understand the content of a story.
