Summary: | European whalers and Russian hunters at Green Harbour, Spitsbergen. In August 2007, an archaeological excavation was carried out at the pre-industrial site of Kokerihamna (Green Harbour, Spitsbergen) within the framework of the international LASHIPA project. At the site many remains from the whaling and hunting period of the 17th and 18th centuries were found, forming the oldest indications for natural resource exploitation in Green Harbour. The site offers an excellent opportunity for studying and comparing the ways in which people of two radically different cultures, European whalers and Russian hunters, exploited the natural resources of Spitsbergen during the pre-industrial period.
