Description
Summary:Anthon Möller, Gdansk’s Mannerist painter of the first half of XVIII century, caught Grass’s interest in the exceptional way. While sketching the main characteristics of Möller’s works in his novel “The Flounder”, he did not decide to give its detailed interpretation. The exception is made by introducing Möller’s picture “The Tribute Money” into the plot of “The Flounder”. The picture was only a pretext to feature the issues that interested the writer. The proof illustrating this thesis is the fact, that Christ, who was the central figure in the picture “The Tribute Money”, was replaced by the fictitious heroine of the novel – Agnieszka Kurbiela, the lover and the muse of Möller. She evokes and unites all the central plots connected with the presentation of the figure of Möller and his paintings. The analysis below shows how Grass took the advantage of the literary interpretation of this picture to present the most important plots of the novel.
