Description
Summary:This thesis is aimed at reviewing the life journey of Karl-Edmund Prier, S.J. and his works in the field of liturgical music inculturation with Pusat Musik Liturgi Yogyakarta (Yogyakartas Liturgical Music Centre). Prier who came to Indonesia for the first time in 1964 has worked a lot in the field of liturgical musics inculturation. This thesis begins with discussing Karl-Edmund Priers childhood in Germany in the times of World War II and the times he learned music from child to teenager until he was called to become a monk and continued Novitiate study in Jesuits Union. After taking Novitiate study, he took the philosophy study in Munchen for two years. During his studies in Munchen, an offer came in 1960 from Father Karl Fank S.J. for a German missionary task to Indonesia. The offer was contrary to his dream in becoming a missionary in the area of Eskimo. After a long struggle, Prier decided to try this offer. Prier arrived at Indonesia in 1964 after a visa delay for two years. Priers initial journey in Indonesia as a foreign missionary was really colorful and challenging. It was also when he had to experience the delay of theology study for two years because of Gestapu incident. After his ordination in 1969, Prier was assigned as a categorical pastor in accordance with his request to the provincials to handle the field of liturgical musics inculturation. Karl-Edmund Prier worked hard pioneering Pusat Musik Liturgi Yogyakarta especially as a place for liturgical musics inculturation. On July 11th , 1971, PML was established in Yogyakarta. Through his leadership which is full of discipline, persistence and independence, PML has continued to grow and produce many works, especially in the areas of liturgical music inculturation.
