Description
Summary:This study presents the first glacial lake inventory for Nelson and King George Island forelands, Maritime Antarctica. Landsat, Digital Globe, Planet Scope and Sentinel 2 data and Google Earth mapping were applied in lake identification. The geomorphometric characteristics were obtained with TanDEM-X and REMA. There are 56 glacial lakes covering areas of 320.000 in Nelson Island, and 144 lakes covering areas of 2.016.169 in King George Island. There lakes are primarily located in coastal sectors (0-40m elevation) and lower slopes (0-20%) terrains in islands. There are lakes in forelands related to recent (i.g. ice-marginal and ice-contact lakes in proglacial areas presented in Admiralty and King George Bay) and old deglaciation (e.g. Harmony, Stanbury, Fildes, Potter, Weaver and Barton Peninsula). The lakes were not identified in Northern sectors of the islands. The characterization of the lakes can assist in the explanation of possible differences of secular evolution of the lakes, therefore the sprouting of lakes in the sectors frontals of glaciers shows how much these are unstable to the heating in the region, and of this form we can infer on the dynamics of each one of them.
