Currently, this type of interpretation has been updated with the theory of functional differentiation of Niklas Luhmann. In this paper we will try to show that this type of sociological interpretation is based on an idealization of differentiation of spheres in the North Atlantic countries, building an empirically unfounded counterpoint to diagnose the lack of functional differentiation in Brazil. As interpretações sociológicas sobre o Brasil, guiadas pelos conceitos de “personalismo e “patrimonialismo”, desenvolvem o diagnóstico de que temos um “déficit de modernidade” e inferem este déficit, em grande medida, de uma suposta ausência ou imperfeição do processo de diferenciação das esferas e subsistemas sociais entre nós. Atualmente, este tipo de interpretação tem sido atualizada com base na teoria da diferenciação funcional de Niklas Luhmann. Neste texto tentaremos mostrar que este tipo de interpretação sociológica parte de uma idealização da diferenciação das esferas nos países do Atlântico Norte, construindo um contraponto empiricamente infundado para diagnosticar a falta de diferenciação funcional entre nós.
